Description
Because the Gaelic Highlands were one of the first modern mass tourism destinations, much has been written about Gaelic Scotland and its people, though a great deal of it fails to give a rounded picture of Gaeldom’s history and culture. Yet a vast amount of material created by the Gaels, in Gaelic, survives and using some of this material, Travels in Another Country (Travels) seeks to provide an introduction to Gaelic Scotland and to address some of the misinformation often provided to visitors. It is a ‘sampler’ for those visitors to the country who have an interest in and a desire to learn a little more about Scotland’s Gaelic people and their place in the country’s story. Travels, published in June of 2025 was, inevitably, a broad-brush national purview, setting the context for potential productions that are of more impact, such as this book, An t-Eilean. Skye, Places and People. This smaller local guide builds on the Skye-specific material in Travels and has been extended with more ‘colourful’ material and is richly illustrated. It is designed almost as a ‘souvenir’ for the visitor. Softback, 178 pages.
